Nicaron Wins Gr1 German Derby

Monday, 4th July 2005

In Germany overnight, Stall Nizza's 3YO Nicaron (by Acatenango) won the Gr1 Deutsches Derby (2400m) at Hamburg, reported thoroughbredinternet.com. Nicaron (trained by Horst Steinmetz) defeated stakes-winner Night Tango (also by Acatenango) & favourite Arcadio (who last start had scored a sensational 15-lengths win in the Gr3 Bavarian Classic). Nicaron now has 3 wins in 6 starts (also including the Merkert Bedachungen-Behling Cup on May 16). Nicaron is the 3rd winner of the Deutsches Derby for Acatenango (who won the race himself 20 years ago in 1985) following Lando (1993) & Borgia (1997); in addition Acatenango's son Blue Canari won last year's Gr1 Prix du Jockey-Club (French Derby). Acatenango (a 3-time German Horse-Of-The-Year) retired to stud in 1988 & died from head injuries sustained in a paddock accident at Gestut Fahrhof in April this year aged 23; on the track, he won 13 successive Group races (including the Gr1 German Derby, Gr1 Preis von Baden-Baden & French Gr1 Grand Prix St Cloud).
