At Royal Randwick on day one of The Championships, Arrowfield Stud's incumbent Champion Australian Sire Snitzel (Redoute's Choice-Snippets' Lass, by Snippets) celebrated an elite races quinella when 3YO Australian-bred colt Trapeze Artist (Snitzel-Treppes, by Domesday) overcame a wide run to draw clear for a strong win in the $2.5 million Gr1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) for 3YO+, defeating Redzel & In Her Time. Not only did Trapeze Artist claim his second top-flight win, but he also broke Black Caviar's race record setting a new benchmark of 1:08.29. Several major studs are now believed to be lining up to purchase Trapeze Artist, who could fetch upwards of $40 million. "All the big farms are on him. I'm going to the sales [Inglis Easter] tomorrow and we will sit down and work out what we're going to do," owner Bert Vieira told the Sydney Morning Herald. Trainer Gerald Ryan said he hopes Trapeze Artist continues to race. "I know he'll probably get a lot of dollars for him but I just hope Bert keeps racing him. It's the best horse he's ever had," Ryan said. Trapeze Artist improved his record to 5 wins (including the Gr1 Golden Rose, Gr2 Expressway Stakes & Gr3 Black Opal Stakes) and 2 placings (the Gr1 Randwick Guineas & Gr1 Inglis Sires' Produce Stakes) from 13 starts for $2,753,850 in earnings. Hailing from the female family of Gr1 winners Crawl and Boardwalk Angel, Trapeze Artist was passed in for $250,000 at the 2016 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Vieira Group. Interestingly, Trapeze Artist also traces his female line back to New Zealand mare Entreaty, the dam of legendary racehorse Phar Lap.
