HEADWATER (AUS)(Exceed and Excel-River Dove, by Hurricane Sky)
Vinery Stud, NSW. Fee: $16,500

Headwater Overview

Speed-on-speed attracts breeders and buyers in the modern-day market and Vinery Stud sire Headwater has both in spades.

Powerful and precocious, Headwater is by pre-eminent speed sire Exceed And Excel from River Dove, who won Caulfield’s ultimate speed test - the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate. They don’t breed them any faster and Team Hawkes bought Headwater for $500,000 at the 2014 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.

He hit the ground running to dispatch some smart juveniles on debut at Moonee Valley. “He was never out of second gear,” Wayne Hawkes beamed. “This horse is a real professional and has shown us plenty of talent right from the start.”

Headwater then turned the Gr.2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) into a procession at Rosehill. Promoted to favouritism for the Gr.1 Golden Slipper, Headwater got to the front in the straight – just like Excel And Excel in 2003 – before going down a length and change.

Back for his final campaign as an Autumn 3yo, the colt responded with a brilliant victory against older sprinters in the Kensington Stakes (L, 1000m) at Flemington. He clocked a slick 56.90s down the straight to defeat Gr.1 Newmarket Hcp winner The Quarterback.

Vinery general manager Peter Orton was quick to point out Headwater lived right up to his pedigree. “He’s a really exciting prospect given the speed in his pedigree and the speed he showed at an early age.”

Headwater was immediately popular with breeders and covered full books of quality mares in his first three seasons.

His first crop weanlings were met with excitement and support at all the major sales in 2018. He was the leading first season sire by average and top price in book 1 at the Inglis Australian Weanling Sale. He impressed the good judges immediately. “I liked Headwater at the Vinery parades and his foals were some of the best I saw in the Hunter Valley last year,” bloodstock agent Andrew Williams said after purchasing the Manju colt for $75,000.

At the Magic Millions National Weanling sale Headwater had a colt from The Carnival sell for $170,000 to James Bester. “I’m keen on Headwater. He was a top-class sprinter with a brilliant pedigree and our colt is a precocious type, too,” vendor Nick Nolan said about the colt.

Headwater’s first yearlings sell in 2019. He stands for a fee of $16,500 inc. GST.

  • Furnaces Relocates To Allandale Park

    Tue, 10 Jul 2018

In an exciting stallion relocation for NSW, it has been announced that Furnaces, a precocious son of Champion juvenile sire Exceed and Excel, will stand his second season at Bathurst-based Allandale Park. With a pedigree awash in speed, Furnaces was just as dazzling on the track in winning his debut at Rosehill by 6-lengths. One of the top 8 2YOs of his generation by Timeform (115), Furnaces took out the Gr3 Kindergarten Stakes (defeating Regatta Rebel and Redzel), before splitting Vancouver and Headwater in the Gr2 Todman and then being beaten only 2-lengths by Vancouver in the Gr1 Golden Slipper. Displaying both soundness and durability, Furnaces raced on at 3 to claim 3rd in the McEwan Stakes before backing up at 4 to take 2nd in the same race. Across his 3 seasons on the track, Furnaces also defeated Tycoon Tara, Sheidel, The Quarterback, Exosphere and Japonisme. From the Strategic mare Heat of the Fire, Furnaces' pedigree includes a double sex-balanced cross of freakish producer Summoned, dam of outstanding gallopers Zeditave, Zedagal, Pampas Fire and Alannon. His 3rd dam Pampas Fire is the producer of Listed Debutante Stakes winner Cloister (dam of dual Gr1 winning mare Melito) as well as Secluded (dam of Gr3 San Domenico winner and Gr1 Blue Diamond runner up Pariah, standing at Arrowfield Stud on debut). Furnaces will stand this season at Allandale Park at a highly competitive $5,500 inc GST (LFG, BOBS).

  • Vinery Announces 2018 Stallion Fees

    Tue, 24 Apr 2018

The Hunter Valley’s Vinery Stud has announced its stallion line-up for 2018 with its trio of young guns Star Turn, Headwater and Press Statement consolidating their stud careers alongside legendary sire More Than Ready. "We strongly believe the Vinery Stallions represent great value to breeders; headed up by one of the leading stallions worldwide in More Than Ready and prolific sires of winners at all levels in All Too Hard, Casino Prince and Pluck,” said general manager Peter Orton. “The future for the farm is very exciting with the depth of talent of our three young stallions Star Turn, Headwater and Press Statement, all who have enjoyed great support from our loyal client to launch their careers." With Testa Rossa remaining at Vinery where he will cover a limited book, the GST-inclusive roster with comments is below:

    • $66,000 More Than Ready (USA): A top 5 Stakes-producing stallion with 183 stakes-winners. Sire of Golden Slipper, Blue Diamond, Magic Millions winners, Group 1 classic colts and fillies and champions like More Joyous. Leading broodmare sire, whose progeny averaged $282,000 at the 2018 Inglis Easter Sale.
    • $33,000 All Too Hard: Champion Australian 3YO Colt who has sired more individual winners in Australia (50) than any other second-season stallion this season. With 6 new stakes-horses in the last month and a Gr1 colt in his second crop (Outrageous), his 3rd crop yearlings sold to $500,000 at the 2018 Inglis Easter Sale.
    • $22,000 Star Turn: Timeform-rated 124 , and covered a full book of mares on debut. Bred for speed, October Randwick 2YO winner Star Turn defeated Golden Slipper winner Capitalist as a 3YO in Gr3 San Domenico S, before beating older horses in the Gr2 WFA Schillaci Stakes. Placed against older sprinters in the Gr1 Lightning S., Gr1 William Reid S. and Gr1 Newmarket Hcp.
    • $16,500 Headwater: Extremely well supported at Vinery in 2016 & 2017, Headwater's first foals are creating a buzz with breeders.  A stakes-winning 2YO and 3YO by Exceed and Excel, he topped all the first-crop stallions at the Inglis Easter Weanling Sale with a colt knocked down to agent Andrew Williams for $75,000.
    • $16,500 Press Statement: Hinchinbrook's best and the only colt of his generation to win at Gr1 level as a 2YO and 3YO. Trainer Chris Waller rated him a superstar and a better 2YO than either Zoustar & Brazen Beau. A magnificent looking stallion, Press Statement showcases 19 of his first-crop foals at the Magic Millions National Sale starting on May 24.
    • $9,900 Casino Prince: Prolific winner-getter and primed for another century of individual winners in 2017-18. He’s currently a Top 10 sire with 91 winners in Australia this season and his record of 104 is well within sight. Bearing down on another milestone with the winners of 997 races to date, Casino Prince maintains an extraordinary 68% winning strike-rate (>6% black type).
    • $6,600 Pluck (USA): More Than Ready’s Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner with stakes-performers Life On The Wire, Mongolian Wolf, Aspect, Gasoline and Lucky Louie in his first two crops. Backing that black-type up with numerous city-winning, sprinter-milers plus overseas winners Winwin Ruby, Jade Theatre (Hong Kong) and Knysna Rose, Aussie Austin, Moon Shadow (South Africa).

  • Vinery Announces 2016 Stud Fees

    Thu, 21 Apr 2016

Vinery Stud has announced its service fees for 2016 with champion sire More Than Ready and star galloper All Too Hard being joined by exciting newcomers Press Statement and Headwater. More Than Ready (USA) stays at a $66,000 fee after a stellar season which has unearthed two year-old colts the calibre of Prized Icon (Gr1 Champagne Stakes) & Kiss and Make Up (Gr2 Todman Stakes). His popularity in the sale-ring continues unabated with his yearlings selling to $950,000 at the Inglis Easter Sale at an average of $278,636. All Too Hard's first crop yearlings have been embraced by local and international buyers at all the major yearling sales this year, topping the freshman median ($220,000) at the Gold Coast Magic Millions and average ($244,048) at the Inglis Easter Sale. Press Statement (Hinchinbrook) retires to Vinery on the back of Gr1 victories as a 2YO and 3YO. He will prove popular at an introductory fee of $27,500. Headwater (Exceed And Excel) is by a Newmarket Hcp winner from Oakleigh Plate winner River Dove and was an exceptional talent winning the Gr2 Silver Slipper Stakes at two and he mixed it with older sprinters at three winning the LR Kensington Stakes (1000m) in 56.90s beating subsequent Newmarket winner The Quarterback.

Meanwhile, ahead of Buffering's next international test in Hong Kong, Mossman sired his 33rd stakes winner on Saturday and fellow Vinery favourite Testa Rossa sired his 57th stakes winner with Reldas (LR Abell Stakes) at Moonee Valley last month. Casino Prince is going better than ever this season with 6 individual stakes-winners, and Husson cracked a career-high double at the Gold Coast in January with Lucky Hussler (Magic Millions Cup) and Husson Eagle (Magic Millions Sprint) both winning races in excess of $1 million. Myboycharlie is doing an excellent job in both hemispheres – Brilliant filly Jameka won the Gr1 VRC Oaks this season and he's dominating French racing with Stakes winners Cheikeljack (colt) and undefeated Camprock (filly) both set for the French classics next month. More Than Ready's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Pluck has begun his stud career brilliantly with early winners not only in Australia but also NZ and South Africa and he's great value a $9,900 fee. The full GST-inclusive line-up is:

    • MORE THAN READY $66,000
    • ALL TOO HARD $55,000
    • PRESS STATEMENT $27,500
    • MOSSMAN $16,500
    • HEADWATER $16,500
    • TESTA ROSSA $16,500
    • HUSSON 13,200
    • CASINO PRINCE $11,000
    • MOYBOYCHARLIE $11,000
    • PLUCK $9,900
  • Headwater Joins Press Statement In Retirement

    Wed, 20 Apr 2016

Meanwhile, Vinery will also welcome another new stallion to its 2016 ranks following the decision to retire the well-credentialled 3YO colt Headwater. By a Newmarket Handicap winner in Exceed And Excel and from an Oakleigh Plate winner in River Dove, Headwater quickly showed he was a horse with a brilliant turn of foot when winning on debut at Moonee Valley over 1000m as a juvenile. The Team Hawkes-trained colt was then sent to Sydney where he again showed blistering speed when taking out the Gr2 ATC Silver Slipper Stakes at Rosehill by a widening 2.5-lengths. At three Headwater mixed it with older sprinters, in the Autumn defeating Newmarket Handicap winner The Quarterback down the Flemington straight, when winning the Listed VRC Kensington Stakes over 1000m in a time of 56.9. "Headwater is a really exciting prospect given the speed in his pedigree and the speed he showed at an early age," noted Vinery general manager Peter Orton. "A horse with immense quality he is sure to be popular amongst breeders being a son of a proven juvenile sire, strong stakes-winning family and brilliant racetrack performances of his own." Like Press Statement, a fee will be announced shortly.

  • Chautauqua Included In Lightning Nominations

    Tue, 16 Feb 2016

Star sprinter Chautauqua is among 15 nominations for Saturday's Gr1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington, reports horseracing.com.au. The two-time Gr1 winner appeared in some doubt to line up in the $750,000 sprint feature after a 1000m jump-out at Flemington on Friday suggested  he may be short of fitness. "He was good. He did everything right," co-trainer Wayne Hawkes said. "Pulled up big and had a big blow, but you would expect that. It depends how he pulls up if he runs in the Lightning next Saturday or not." The Lightning has attracted a high quality field with proven Gr1-winning speedsters Delectation, Japonisme, Exosphere, and Terravista joined by up-and-coming types such as Keen Array, Kinglike and Brockhoff. The Gr1 Lightning nominations are:

    10. KEEN ARRAY

    11. KINGLIKE

At Flemington in Melbourne, Darley's former Champion Australian Sire Exceed And Excel (Danehill-Patrona, by Lomond) added a black-type success when 3YO colt Headwater (Exceed and Excel-River Dove, by Hurricane Sky) scored by 0.2-length for trainers John, Wayne & Michael Hawkes in the $120,000 Listed Kensington Stakes (1000m) for 3YO+, over 4YO gelding Bull Pit (Speed 'n' Power-Madamesta, by Estambul) & 5YO gelding The Quarterback (Street Boss-Soorena, by Encosta de Lago). The beautifully bred Headwater, by Exceed And Excel out of Gr1 Oakleigh Plate winner River Dove, took his record to 3 wins (including the Gr2 Silver Slipper Stakes) and 1 placing from 9 starts for $458,400 earnings. Headwater was a $500,000 purchase by Hawkes Racing at the 2014 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Cressfield Stud and races in the colours of Vinery Stud. "He just wasn't quite right in the spring," co-trainer Wayne Hawkes said of the valuable colt. "I told the owners, 'We've got nowhere to hide today', he really has to step up and run big today, and that's what he did." Winning jockey Dwayne Dunn echoed Hawkes' comments, adding he was confident that a more mature Headwater could now realise his undoubted potential. "We had a really big opinion of him. He won his first two starts," Dunn said. "They don't get an easy life these horses, they have to go to the top level very quickly." He added: "He just was in the wilderness last preparation, but he trialled really well and was more relaxed this time in, and hopefully he can reach the heights we think he can."

  • Vancouver Heads San Domenico Nominations

    Tue, 11 Aug 2015

Golden Slipper hero Vancouver heads the nominations for Saturday's Gr3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens. The unbeaten son of Medaglia d'Oro has been allotted top weight of 60kg for the $125,000 3YO feature which has also attracted entries from Gr2 Silver Slipper winner Headwater, promising sprinter Japonisme, Snitzel's three-quarter brother King's Troop, and Exceed And Excel gelding Haptic, impressive winner of the Listed Lonhro Plate at Randwick in February. The only unraced entry is the Bryce Heys-trained colt Spieth, a $200,000 NZB purchase by Thorn Park who was a recent 4.3-length trial winner at Randwick on 31 July. Spieth is a direct descendent of the Chop Chop mare Ciboulette, dam of celebrated blue hen Fanfreluche. Click here to view all nominations for Rosehill on Saturday.

  • Boom Crimson Reign Son Confirmed For Canterbury Debut

    Fri, 7 Aug 2015

Although it's a long way from the trial track to landing the spoils at the races, former ATC chairman and Torryburn Stud principal John Cornish will be holding thumbs about highly touted unraced 3YO colt Deploy. The exciting prospect is out of Cornish's talented mare Crimson Reign, winner of the Gr3 Kindergarten Stakes at just her second start and sixth in the Gr1 Golden Slipper. With further stakes victories and placed in the Gr3 Missile Stakes over 1200m, she appears to have passed on some of her zip to Deploy who is by champion Australian sire Fastnet Rock. He is her third foal and created a powerful impression when defeating two high class individuals in Headwater and Press Statement in his latest trial at Rosehill earlier this week. Trained by Gerald Ryan, and owned by Cornish in partnership with Segenhoe Stud principal Kevin Maloney, M. Ennis & David Raphael's Stallion Racing, Deploy is expected to have his first race start at Canterbury in two weeks time.

  • $4 Million Yearling Set For Debut

    Thu, 14 May 2015

Beautifully bred colt Emaratee (Fastnet Rock-River Dove, by Hurricane Sky) is set to make his eagerly awaited debut today in an 1100m maiden at Gosford. The Team Hawkes-trained 3YO, who will race in the yellow with royal blue vee silks of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum in partnership with Emirates Park, is also nominated for a 1000m maiden on the opening day of the Scone Racing Carnival tomorrow. By champion sire Fastnet Rock out of Gr1 Oakleigh Plate winner River Dove, Emaratee is a three-quarter brother to Gr2 Silver Slipper winner Headwater (Exceed And Excel) and was the sale topper at the 2013 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale when selling to Emirates Park for $4 million from the draft of Cressfield Stud. Emaratee has had several trials to ready him for his debut, the latest when winning a 740m trial at Warwick Farm on 24 April. The valuable youngster will be ridden by Tommy Berry and will jump from barrier 5 in the field of eight if he does run today.

  • Vancouver Steady Despite Poor Slipper Barrier

    Fri, 20 Mar 2015

Even though he has drawn an extremely wide marble (18) for tomorrow's Gr1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens in Sydney, exciting 2YO colt Vancouver (Medaglia d'Oro-Skates, by Danehill) is still a strong $3 favourite with bookmakers. The Gai Waterhouse-trained juvenile remained undefeated after three starts when beating a high quality field with relative ease in the Gr2 Todman Stakes two weeks ago. The main protagonists in the Slipper market include: Vancouver ($3), Exosphere ($4), Headwater ($12), Ready For Victory ($13), Furnaces ($14), Haptic ($15), English ($17) & Lake Geneva ($18). Those looking for lottery-like returns will find four runners at 3-figure odds: Look To The Stars ($101), Serenade ($101), Racy ($151) & Heavenly Hand ($301).

  • Three Late Slipper Entries

    Tue, 17 Mar 2015

The connections of Fireworks (Snitzel), Single Gaze (Not A Single Doubt) and Odyssey Moon (Snitzel) kept their Golden Slipper dream alive by paying the $150,000 late entry fee for Saturday's $3.5 million Gr1 2YO feature at Rosehill Gardens. The Slipper field will be announced at Rosehill this morning after Breakfast With The Stars with the barrier draw to take place at the track at 11am. Gai Waterhouse's unbeaten colt Vancouver remains the dominant $2.80 favourite for the world's richest juvenile race ahead of Godolphin colt Exosphere ($4.60) and the Team Hawkes-trained Headwater ($8), who will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing effort behind Vancouver in the Gr2 Todman Stakes last start.
