At Royal Randwick in Sydney on a day punctuated by storm activity, former Think Big Stud dual Gr3-winning stallion Pendragon (Elnadim-Alacrity, by Grosvenor) added a Group success when brilliantly consistent gelded 4YO miler-stayer Sky Boy (Pendragon-Zazabelle, by Zabeel) scored a rapidly diminishing 0.2-length victory for trainer Anthony 7 edward Cummings in the $252,000 Gr2 Villiers Stakes (1600m), over fast-finishing 4YO mare Aloisia and 7YO gelding My Nordic Hero. Taking over not long after leader Fabrisio was challenged in the straight, Sky Boy achieved three important distinctions simultaneously: 5 wins in a row (at distances ranging from 1550m to 2000m), his first Group win, and automatic qualification for next year’s Gr1 Doncaster Handicap. Saturday’s win advanced his growing reputation and record to 7 wins & 3 placings (including the Listed Seppelt Wine Stakes at Flemington) from 12 starts for earnings of $420,775.

At Te Rapa in New Zealand, Westbury Stud's Gr1 French Derby and Gr1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes winning shuttler Reliable Man (Dalakhani-On Fair Stage, by Sadler's Wells) added a Group win when 4YO mare Belle du Nord (Reliable Man-Bankside Belle, by Volksraad) scored an upset half-length win for trainers Emma-Lee and David Browne. With Murray Baker & Andrew Forsman stablemates Lizzie L’Amour and Love Affair virtually level-pegging in the market as $2.50 favourites until the latter finally jumped favourite, it looked highly likely that the stable’s trifecta in 2017 could be repeated again. With 150m to go a blanket would have covered the entire field, but Belle du Nord was closing hard down the outside to overcome game 6YO mare Lizzie L’Amour and fellow 4YO mare Supera. Despite glowing Gr1 form, almost always the  bridesmaid, Belle du Nord’s maiden black-type win improved her record to 2 wins & 6 placings (including the Gr1 Levin Stakes, Gr1 Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes and Gr3 Schweppervescence Stakes in Adelaide) from 16 starts for $180,592 in earnings. Belle du Nord was sold by Bradbury Park for $50,000 to Michael Otto Bloodstock at the 2016 NZB National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Sale.

At Perth’s Ascot Racecourse, Coolmore's 2YO Triple Crown-winning Champion stallion Pierro (Lonhro-Miss Right Note, by Daylami) added a Group race success when 4YO gelding Arcadia Prince had almost a half-length to spare for trainer Adam Durrant in the $245,000 Gr3 A.J. Scahill Stakes (1400m), over 6YO gelding Great Shot and 7YO gelding Red Publisher. Anchored by the weight of expectation that comes from being a full-brother to hugely exciting Gr1-winning 3YO filly Arcadia Queen, Arcadia Prince is no slouch himself, his 13 starts producing 7 wins and 3 placings from 13 starts for $460,275 in earnings. The win gave Adam Durrant his third winner of the Scahill Stakes.

At Te Rapa in New Zealand, Coolmore’s deceased dual Derby-winning shuttler & 6-time Gr1 victor High Chaparral (Sadler's Wells-Kasora, by Darshaan) added a group success when emerging gelded 4YO stayer Mongolian Marshal (High Chaparral-Ardeche, by Dehere) was too strong late and won by 1.3-lengths for trainers Murray Baker & Andrew Forsman in the $100,000 Gr3 Waikato Cup (2400m), over favoured 5YO German-bred mare Igraine and 6YO gelding Five To Midnight. Sam Collett attempted to repeat Igraine’s pillar-to-post win over Mongolian Marshal in last month’s Gr3 Counties Cup, however the extra 300m on a dead track saw her tire in the closing stages despite fighting back when headed. A runner in this year’s Gr1 Australian Derby in Sydney as a 3YO, Mongolian Marshal races in the same red and white colours as 2015 Gr1 Australian Derby winner and NZ Horse of the Year Mongolian Khan. After initially selling as a yearling for $200,000 at the 2016 NZB NYSS, Mongolian Marshal was passed-in off a reserve of $300,000 at the 2016 NZB Ready To Run Sale of 2YOs. He now has 5 wins & 4 placings from 13 starts for $191,395 in earnings.

At Awapuni in New Zealand, Waikato Stud's Cox Plate-winning multiple champion sire Savabeel (Zabeel-Savannah Success, by Success Express) added a Group race success when 3YO filly Queen of Diamonds scored by an effortless 2.8-lengths for trainers Murray Baker & Andrew Forsman in the $68,000 Gr3 Eulogy Stakes (1550m) for 3YO fillies, from fellow fillies Elate and Just Fabulous. Fresh off smashing her rivals by 5-lengths to record her maiden victory at her third start, the promising favourite gave her rivals wind-burn at the top of the straight when she shot clear after stalking the pace and angling off the fence. A $650,000 yearling consigned by Cambridge Stud and purchased by China Horse Club at the 2017 NZB National Yearling Sales Series, Queen of Diamonds’ facile victory provided her with 6 points on the NZ Filly of the Year table. With 2 wins and a placing from 4 starts, Queen of Diamonds improved her career earnings to $49,175.

At Randwick in NSW, another first-crop sire entered the stakes spotlight when dual Gr1 winning Darley stallion Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible-Sansadee, by Snaadee) notched his first stakes winner (from only 8 career starters to date) in the form of Accession (Brazen Beau-Ready as Elle, by More Than Ready) in the $500,000 Listed Inglis Nursery (1000m) for 2YOs by 0.8-lengths. Runner-up was the eye-catching Strasbourg, incidentally by Brazen Beau's sire, I Am Invincible, with Namino in 3rd. Accession was a $300,000 purchase from the Widden Stud draft at the 2018 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale. His dam is a half-sister to Champion Singaporean sprinter and 4-time stakes winner Emperor Max. The victory took his record to 1 win and 1 placing from 2 starts for $314,000 in earnings. Accession also now becomes the second of only two qualifiers (after the win of Espaaniyah in the other qualifying race on Cox Plate Day) still in the running for the lucrative $3m Inglis Triple Crown. The final two races are the $2m Inglis Millennium (Warwick Farm, Saturday Feb 9) and the $1m Inglis Sires (Randwick, Saturday April 6).

At Doomben in Brisbane, Widden Stud stallion and former 3YO champion Australian sprinter Zoustar (Northern Meteor-Zouzou, by Redoute's Choice) added a stakes success when 3YO gelding Zoustyle opened up a good lead before holding off fast-finishing stablemate filly Outback Barbie in the $125,000 Listed Gold Edition Plate (1200m). Third was the filly Pennino. Trainer Tony Gollan, enjoying a purple patch of form with his team, described the unbeaten son of boom 2nd crop sire Zoustar as potentially the best horse he has ever trained. The win took Zoustyle’s rapidly improving record to 5 wins from 5 starts for $243,200 in stakes earnings. Zoustyle is eligible to pick up a $500,000 bonus should he tackle and win the Gr3 Vo Rogue Plate on 29 December, but even half a million may not be enough to tempt connections who will believe they have much bigger fish to potentially fry next autumn and beyond. On Sky Racing, Gollan commented, “He’s got a very bright career ahead of him and whether that’s in the next two weeks or in the next two years we will work that out."

The win by Houtzen advanced her record to 7 wins (including the Gr3 PJ Bell Stakes, Gr3 Scarborough Stakes & Magic Millions 2YO Classic) and 2 placings (tincluding the Gr2 McEwen Stakes, twice & Listed ATC Fireball Stakes) from 17 starts for $2,007,525 in earnings. Kramerik's stablemate Lubuk looked a flashing light upcoming runner over slightly more ground when filling 4th position out wide. The victory took The Odyssey's record to 2 wins and 1 placing from only 3 starts and $161,050 in earnings. The colt was a bargain $30,000 2018 Gold Coast Magic Millions yearling purchase from the draft of Millbrook. From a pedigree perspective, his 3rd dam Northern Valley is a three-quarter-sister to the lofty black-type names Green Dancer, Val Danseur and Soviet Lad. The Odyssey is now likely to head to the lucrative Magic Millions 2YO Classic on the Gold Coast on 12 January where he is currently on the 7th line of betting at 11-1.

  • NEW Weather Could Influence MM 2YO Lead-Ups

    Weekend, 14th December 2018
The build up to Magic Millions' $10 million raceday on January 12 at the Gold Coast intensifies at Doomben on Saturday with a string of feature races to be contested. While the depth of the fields is strong, the weather gods may have a substantial influence on results with forecasts for South East Queensland predicting widespread rain. The Listed Phelan Ready Stakes and Listed Calaway Gal Stakes will help shape markets for the $2 million The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic. Following Wednesday's impressive win at Wyong, Unite and Conquer is the $4.50 favourite across many markets. Tony McEvoy won last year's Classic with Sunlight and he is hoping another Zoustar youngster, Sun City, can book his place in the field as he steps out favourite in the Phelan Ready Stakes. Sun City was second on debut to Unite and Conquer when he made ground from well back in the field in the listed Maribyrnong Trial at Flemington. Meanwhile, unbeaten filly Courseshewill will be out to strengthen her Millions claims in the Calaway Gal amongst other Classic entrants Country Cocktail, Gala Miss and Boomstress.

  • NEW Jazzland Trainer Says E-Trakka Is A Must

    Weekend, 14th December 2018
Progressive NSW trainer Kristen Buchanan, whose promising stayer Jazzland romped home on Magic Millions Raceday at Wyong earlier this week, was tweeting before the win that trainers should do themselves a favour and get an E-Trakka. Jazzland’s back-to-back victories over the Wyong 2100m are largely thanks to the sophisticated, but easy to use, training aide which was instrumental in convincing Buchanan that sprinting was never going to be Jazzland’s caper. Instead, the data revealed that, with patience, Jazzland would develop into a very good stayer. Having a massive 8 metre stride at full gallop, one of the biggest in over two decades of E-Trakka data from thousands of racehorses, Buchanan had to convice her owners to stick tight because the rewards would come. With 2 wins (including a 9-length demolition job) and 2 runners-up from his last 4 starts, Buchanan is genuinely excited about the future with Jazzland. “With E-Trakka, there’s no guesswork. I know when he’s ready to win!” E-Trakka’s new and improved model, the XV3 Fitness Monitor is due out soon. CLICK HERE for more information.

  • Last Chance For $3 Million Inglis Triple Crown

    Weekend, 14th December 2018
The second and final 2YO eligible for the lucrative $3 million Inglis Triple Crown will be known following the running of Saturday’s $500,000 Inglis Nursery at Randwick. The Inglis Nursery is the second race in the $8 million 2018 Inglis Race Series and doubles as the ‘first’ leg of the Inglis Triple Crown. To win the Triple Crown (and a $3 million bonus), a horse must win either the Inglis Banner (Easter filly Espaaniyah, pictured, won this at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day) or Saturday’s $500,000 Inglis Nursery, and then the $2 million Inglis Millennium (Warwick Farm, Saturday February 9) and the $1 million Inglis Sires (Randwick, Day 1 of The Championships, Saturday April 6). A total of 14 runners have accepted for the Nursery and the field is made up of graduates from each of Inglis’ three primary select yearling sales – Classic, Premier and Easter. The Snowden stable holds a strong hand with three live chances including $750k Easter Yearling Strasbourg (pictured). The winning trainer of the Inglis Nursery will receive a set of Swarovski Optik EL 32 Swarovision binoculars valued at $2,554.

  • Sister To Thousand Guineas Winner On Debut

    Weekend, 14th December 2018
Movie Role is a full-sister to Gr1 MRC Thousand Guineas winner Irish Lights (Fastnet Rock-Aspen Falls, by Hennessy). Debuting in the VRC Secondbite 2YO Plate over 1100m, at Flemington on Saturday, Movie Role was sold at the 2018 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale by Coolmore Stud to Lindsay Park Racing for $600,000, making Movie Role the most expensive yearling out of Aspen Falls. Irish Lights is the dam of Gr2 winner Omei Sword (High Chaparral), while their dam Aspen Fall is out of a half-sister to one of the world’s best mares in Fall Aspen. Movie Role is trained by David & Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig, and will lack nothing for education.

  • Queen’s Brother Out To Emulate Younger Sister

    Weekend, 14th December 2018
Perth’s champion jockey William Pike, who has an army of followers across the country, is confident that Arcadia Prince is up to winning Saturday’s $250,000 Gr3 Scahill Stakes (1400m) at Ascot. According to thewest.com.au, Pike acknowledges that while the year-older full-brother to Gr1 Kingston Town Stakes 3YO heroine Arcadia Queen is not in her class, he’s still a pretty good horse in his own right. “Though he’s not in his sister’s class, he’ll still be hard to beat in Saturday’s race,” said Pike. The Bob Peters-bred and owned duo are by undefeated Champion 2YO Pierro (Lonhro). Arcadia Prince has drawn well for the event after winning three of his past four starts, and is one of three entrants for the Adam Durrant stable, with both State Solicitor and Pinzu standing their ground. Likely favourite Valour Road is marginally shorter in the market than Arcadia Prince, with Great Shot touching each-way odds.
  • Yulong Investments Secures Major Ballydoyle Haul

    Weekend, 14th December 2018
Growing Victorian-based operation Yulong Investments, whose green and white silks are featuring prominently on the racetrack, has secured a veritable coup through the acquisition of 20 thoroughbreds from Aidan O’Brien’s Irish training centre Ballydoyle. According to TDN Australia & New Zealand, a dozen progeny by world champion stallion Galileo, including Empireofthedragon, an unraced son of former Australian champion 4-time Gr1 winner Atlantic Jewel, headed up the extraordinary bulk buy. Standout on form in the collective is Goodwood’s Gr2 Richmond Stakes winner Land Force (No Nay Never) who will be trained by Peter and Paul Snowden in Sydney. Team Hayes, Hayes & Dabernig have been chosen as the trainers of Emireofthedragon. Yulong Investments has also been active in Europe where it purchased another 6 horses. In addition to the Galileo contingent, Yulong’s other buys also include five by Justify's ill-fated sire Scat Daddy who set a US record in 2015 for the number of juvenile stakes-winners in a season. There are also three horses by Invincible Spirit, sire of sensational Australian sire I Am Invincible.

  • NZ Filly of the Year Points On Offer In Eulogy

    Weekend, 14th December 2018
The Gr3 Eulogy Stakes winner will gain six points on the NZ Filly of the Year table, and with the current leaders not contesting the race, Saturday’s winner be boosted up the rankings. Only one runner, Rocket Fuel (Smart Missile), already has points, after running third in the Gr3 Gold Trail Stakes, and a win would propel her into third on the table. Among the runners are the blue-blooded Queen of Diamonds (Savabeel) who sold for $640,000 at the 2017 NZ Premier Sale, and subsequently winning her maiden by nearly five lengths at her last start. Secret Allure (Zacinto) is another strong chance, having run fourth in the Gr1 New Zealand Thousand Guineas at her last start. The NZ Filly of the Year Series points table is currently led by Media Sensation (I Am Invincible) with 12 points, while Valalie (Snitzel) has 7 points ahead of Xpression (Showcasing) on 6.5.
  • Baker Hoping Isuzu History Repeats

    Weekend, 14th December 2018
New Zealand Hall of Fame trainer Murray Baker produced a memorable trifecta in last year's Gr2 Cal Isuzu Stakes (1600m) at Te Rapa (see below) and, with three runners once more, has another chance to achieve it again. In 2017 Lizzie L'Amour anchored the trifecta, defeating stablemates Love Affair and Stolen Dance, the latter subsequently winning the Gr1 Thorndon Mile (1600m) at Trentham before she was retired to stud. The first two are back again, jousting for equal favouritism, while twice Gr1-placed Nicoletta makes up the threesome. "It was a good race for us last year, and while there are one or two good mares up against us, our three have all got form on the board," said Baker, who trains in partnership with Andrew Forsman.

  • First Start For $850k Blueblood In Sydney

    Weekend, 14th December 2018
Twentyfour Carat (I Am Invincible–Ten Carat Rock, by Rock of Gibraltar) debuts on Friday night at Canterbury racecourse  in Sydney in the TAB Rewards Maiden Plate (1200m). Sold for $850,000 at (sale) to Domeland Pty Ltd, the colt is trained by John O’Shea at Randwick. Twentyfour Carat’s dam is a full-sister to Gr3 winner Sliding Cube (dam of Rubick), and a half-sister to Redoute’s Choice, Platinum Scissors, Manhattan Rain and Echoes of Heaven. Gr1 winner and Champion 3YO Filly Shoals is also a member of this illustrious family. Ten Carat Rock’s first foal to race, Lady Cartier (by Fastnet Rock), is a winner. At $11, the market suggests Twentyfour Carat may struggle to go with debutantes Devachan and L’Cosmo who are vying for favouritism.

  • Soqrat To Fly Australian Flag In Gr1 Cape Guineas

    Weekend, 14th December 2018
Exciting Gr1-winning 2YO colt Soqrat (by Darley stallion Epaulette) will take his place in Cape Town’s Gr1 Cape Guineas (1600m) at Kenilworth on Saturday. Trained by Mike De Kock and owned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum, the colt won three of his four starts as a juvenile, including the Gr1 Greyville Premiers Champion Stakes over 1600m (beating fellow Australian-bred Alyaasaat). After running third fresh up, in the Gr2 Johnannesburg Spring Challenge at the start of October, Soqrat looks well placed in the 3YO feature, one of the Cape’s major Summer events. Soqrat was not offered at auction and is out of Elzeeza (Hussonet) who won two races, from the family of Lucky Bubbles.

  • Galileo & Sons Dominate 2020 Epsom Derby Entries

    Weekend, 14th December 2018
The first round of entries of the 2020 Epsom Derby have been released, with 356 yearlings entered by their owners (up from 339 last year). Unsurprisingly, European Champion Sire Galileo’s progeny lead the charge with 56 yearlings nominated for the classic, including a yearling out of Australia’s Gr1 winner Atlantic Jewel, and a sibling to Highland Reel (out of Aussie mare Hveger, a daughter of Circles of Gold whose siblings include Gr1 champions Elvstroem and Haradasun). Galileo’s sons have the next highest representation with Galileo’s Derby winner Australia having 24 yearlings nominated, while unbeaten star and top class sire Frankel has 22. The early stage entry for the 2020 Epsom Derby costs owners £560 per name. Owners can also enter horses at the £9,000 second entry stage in April 2020 and at the £85,000 supplementary stage on June 1, 2020.
  • Weekend Black Type Feature Schedule

    Weekend, 14th December 2018
Headlined by the running of a brace of Gr2 events, one on each side of the Tasman Sea, this weekend features 15 Group & Listed races. Te Rapa in New Zealand hosts the Gr2 Cal Isuzu Stakes where Lizzie L'Amour will look to go one better than her runner-up on October's Gr1 Livamol Classic. At Royal Randwick in Sydney, the time-honoured Gr2 Villiers Stakes is a wide open affair headed by Sky Boy. Attempting to make it 5 wins straight he won't know himself with the 53kg on his back.  Brought to you by Tamalee Farm's stallion Arlington, below in AEST order, are Saturday's and Sunday's scheduled stakes and feature races, incorporating integrated fields, form, indicative odds and runner news.
